About The Book

Elba

This is a story of two people who were born on the ancient rock of Isola d’Elba during the tumultuous and brutal early twentieth century. An island basking in crystal-clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, steeped in thousands of years of history that forged the unique character of its inhabitants.

The first chapter introduces Gigi, a young man who, along with his friends, decides to skip school and head to one of Elba’s picturesque beach coves. However, their enjoyment of swimming, foraging, and other activities is disrupted by pride and jealousy. Eventually, realizing that envy is a muse’s trick, they end the day by sharing folk tales around a beach campfire. Gigi, a romantic, draws inspiration from the mythological stories of Aeneas and Venus’s infatuation, applying them to his own life.

The second chapter shifts to the self-sufficient Gemelli family, residing on a struggling hilltop farm. As the daughters grow up, they engage in romantic fantasies as they face a world that is about to be turned upside down. For the Gemelli family, religious practices were not just a matter of faith but also a means of survival, prosperity, and navigating the complexities of their lives. Once living an independent and laissez-faire existence, the Gemelli family was subjected to the suppression of their freedoms under five flags: Fascism, Nazism, British, French, and American.

Their separate life stories became a cherished shrine in our American household. They proudly recounted their memories and applied them to our daily lives. We listened attentively, and now their memoirs are preserved and added to the history of the Island of Elba.
